OOSTHUIZEN, ENGLISH, VAN PELT, MOORE, CABRERA, VILLEGAS AND KELLY COMMIT TO 2013 TRAVELERS CHAMPIONSHIP
HARTFORD, Conn., June 11, 2013 – With the Travelers Championship just one week away, the tournament has secured seven additional commitments to its already strong field. Louis Oosthuizen, Harris English, Bo Van Pelt, Ryan Moore, Angel Cabrera, Camilo Villegas, and Jerry Kelly have all committed to play TPC River Highlands from June 17 to 23.
“Our latest group of commitments includes great golfers, which makes our already competitive field even better,” said Travelers Championship Tournament Director Nathan Grube. “Many of these players are familiar with TPC River Highlands and have played our tournament several times. I’m sure many of our fans will be excited to see them back in Connecticut.”
Louis Oosthuizen is currently ranked No. 9 in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) and is making his second straight appearance at the Travelers Championship. The South African is one of the best golfers in the game, winning the 2010 Open Championship, finishing runner up in the 2012 Masters, and earning a top-10 in the 2011 U.S. Open. Oosthuizen is still fairly new to the TOUR, having played just 60 total events. Despite this limited number of starts, Oosthuizen has already had four top-three, 10 top-10 finishes, and 22 top-25 finishes. Internationally, Oosthuizen has been sensational, winning 10 times including the European Tour’s 2013 Volvo Golf Champions.
Coming off his first career victory at the FedEx St. Jude Classic last week, Harris English is making his second straight appearance at the Travelers Championship. Since turning professional in 2011, English has become one of the TOUR’s next young stars. Along with his victory in Memphis, English also has four top-10 and five top-25 finishes this season, with nearly $2 million in TOUR earnings. English’s strong play this year has earned him a No. 13 ranking in the FedExCup standings.
Bo Van Pelt, currently ranked No. 28 in the OWGR, has had tremendous success at TPC River Highlands. He’s making his 11th appearance, and seventh straight, compiling two top-10 and six top-25 finishes at the tournament. Van Pelt has had success at several other venues too, as he has 10 top-three finishes (including a win at the 2009 U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee), 49 top-10s, and 114 top-25s in his career, earning him nearly $19 million in TOUR earnings.
Since turning professional in 2005, Ryan Moore has become a staple at TPC River Highlands, and will be making his eighth straight appearance. He has had success at the tournament, earning three top-10 finishes, include a runner up finish in 2006. Moore has become a top player on TOUR, earning two wins, six second-place finishes, two third-place finishes, 37 top-10s, 66 top-25s, and nearly $15 million in TOUR earnings. This season he has two top-10 finishes and his ranked No. 47 in the OWGR and No. 67 in the FedExCup standings.
Two-time major winner Angel Cabrera will be making his second straight appearance to the Travelers Championship. The winner of the 2009 Masters Tournament and 2007 U.S. Open has earned nearly $12 million in earnings in nearly 200 career TOUR appearances. He has also had a very successful international career, as the Argentinian has 39 international victories. This season, he finished second at the 2013 Masters. He’s currently No. 42 in the FedExCup standings and No. 59 in the OWGR.
Camilo Villegas will make his third appearance at TPC River Highlands, and second straight. The Colombian has played well in his nearly 10-year career, winning three times, and earning three second place, seven third place, 35 top-25 and 60 top-25 finishes, netting him more than $15 million in TOUR earnings. He has also won twice internationally. This season, Villegas has two top-10 and four top-25 finishes.
Jerry Kelly is a local favorite, having graduated from the University of Hartford. This is the 16th time he’s played TPC River Highlands and 10th straight. The veteran has had a successful career, winning three times, and earning six second-place, eight third-place, 80 top-10 and 169 top-25 finishes. He’s earned nearly $25 million in career TOUR earnings.
Oosthuizen, English, Van Pelt, Moore, Cabrera, Villegas, and Kelly join a field that already includes top golfers such as Bubba Watson, Hunter Mahan, Keegan Bradley, Justin Rose, Lee Westwood, Rickie Fowler, Ian Poulter, Zach Johnson, and reigning champion Marc Leishman.
