TOURNAMENT WEEK BEGINS AT TPC RIVER HIGHLANDS
CROMWELL, Conn., June 20, 2011- The 2011 Travelers Championship commenced today with an Opening Ceremony on the first hole of TPC River Highlands. Community leaders and tournament officials gathered to officially kick off the 59th installment of the tournament.
Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy, Honorary Chairman for the 2011 Travelers Championship, opened the ceremony with remarks. In addition to the Governor, the ceremony includes the Connecticut National Guard 102nd Army Band and the Silver Dolphins, Groton Sub Base’s Color Guard. The event was highlighted by a ceremonial tee shot by Tim Beneski, parent of a camper from The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, before concluding with a reception in the Patriots’ Outpost.
Following the Opening Ceremony, the tournament hosted the Aetna Tournament Players Pro-Am with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. The pro-am had 28 PGA TOUR professionals playing with Amateurs on the tournament course. Some of the professionals included Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey, Trinity Alum Jay Williamson and Morgan Hoffmann, who grew up locally and will make his professional debut this weekend.
Tickets are available now for the week, which will include one of the deepest fields in tournament history.
