TOMS AND POULTER EARN VICTORIES
TWO EARLY COMMITMENTS WIN ON THE PGA TOUR AND EUROPEAN TOUR ON SUNDAY
CROMWELL, Conn., May 22, 2011 – David Toms won the Crowne Plaza Invitational after finishing second at THE PLAYERS Championship last week, while Ian Poulter won the Volvo World Match Play Championship in Andalucia, Spain. Toms earned his first victory on the PGA TOUR since 2006, and Poulter earned his first European Tour victory of 2011.
David Toms shot a final round 67 to win by one shot over Charlie Wi at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. He earned $1.16 million with the victory and moved to 4th place in the 2011 FedExCup standings. In addition to his victory, Toms guaranteed himself a spot in the 2011 U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club just one week before the Travelers Championship.
Ian Poulter made history on Sunday, as he became the first player to win both the Volvo Match Play Championship (European Tour) and the World Golf Championships – Accenture Match Play Championship (PGA TOUR). He defeated fellow Englishman Luke Donald 2 and 1 on Sunday to claim his first victory on the European Tour since the 2010 UBS Hong Kong Open. He now has 12 international victories and one victory on the PGA TOUR, which came at the 2010 Accenture Match Play Championship.
Two other Travelers Championship early commitments finished in the top 10 at the Crowne Plaza Invitational on Sunday, including Zach Johnson (4) and Hunter Mahan (T10).
Johnson had his best finish of the year and second top 10 in 2011 after he shot a final round 65. Mahan earned his seventh top-10 finish in just 13 starts by shooting an even-par 70 for his final round. Johnson moved to 39th on the FedExCup regular season standings, while Mahan moved to 15th.
