Thursday, June 20 Recap
The fourth day of tournament week brought the official first round of the 2019 Travelers Championship and the much-anticipated return of Women’s Day for its 11th year.
With the first groups teeing off at 6:45 a.m., 156 PGA TOUR players began competition for the $7.2 million purse, and six ended the day tied for the lead. Ryan Armour, Bronson Burgoon, Kyoung-Hoon Lee, Abraham Ancer, Mackenzie Hughes and Zack Sucher all shot 6-under-par 64s at TPC River Highlands. Six players, led by Keegan Bradley and Paul Casey, were one shot behind. Other big names included past champions Phil Mickelson (67), Bubba Watson (69), Brooks Koepka (71) and Jordan Spieth (73).
Women’s Day, which was first presented by Travelers in 2008, brings women together for a morning of golf, networking, and, of course, charity. This year’s sold-out breakfast was hosted by renowned broadcast journalist Margaret Brennan and Tony Award-winning Broadway actress Kelli O’Hara. The 700 women in attendance were also provided with a free golf clinic with PGA professionals, as well as preferred seating for the tournament and a discount on Travelers Championship merchandise.
The second round of play will take place Friday, after which the 36-hole cut will be made at the low 70 and ties. Additionally, once second-round play concludes, spectators can attend the Concert Series featuring rock band Spin Doctors.
