SIX MORE PLAYERS ADDED TO FIELD
POULTER, FOWLER, TOMS, BARNES, PAVIN AND IMMELMAN COMMIT TO THE 2011 TRAVELERS CHAMPIONSHIP
Players Have Combined for 30 Wins on the PGA TOUR
HARTFORD, Conn., May 17, 2011- The Travelers Championship announced six additional player commitments to the 2011 player field including Ian Poulter, Rickie Fowler, David Toms, Ricky Barnes, Corey Pavin and Trevor Immelman. The announcement came during media day festivities at TPC River Highlands, which included a press conference with defending champion Bubba Watson who has already committed to the 2011 Travelers Championship.
“We are thrilled to announce another wave of early commitments and add these tremendous six professionals to our field for 2011,” said Travelers Championship Tournament Director Nathan Grube. “It’s great to see both the players who continue to have our event on their calendar, as well as players coming here for the first time.”
Ian Poulter will be making his first-ever appearance to the Travelers Championship this year. Currently 22nd in the Official World Golf Rankings, the Englishman has 11 total career wins internationally including one PGA TOUR title at the 2010 Accenture Match Play Championship. Poulter has made eight of eight cuts in 2011 on the PGA TOUR, with his best finish a tie for sixth at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. Poulter was also a member of the 2010 European Ryder Cup squad.
2010 PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year, Rickie Fowler, will be making his third trip to Cromwell this summer. Fowler had seven top-10 finishes in 2010 and was a member of the United States Ryder Cup team. He has continued his strong play in 2011 with five finishes in the top 20 in just 12 events.
David Toms, fresh off of a second place finish at the Players Championship, will be making his 10th appearance at the Travelers Championship. Toms owns a major championship title, winning the 2001 PGA Championship. He’s played consistently well all year, earning three top 10 finishes. His best finish in Cromwell came in 2009, where he tied for second place.
Ricky Barnes will be making his third trip to TPC River Highlands in June. His best performance at the Travelers Championship came last year when he finished tied for fifth. In 2011, he has fared well, scoring a pair of top five finishes, including fourth place at The Honda Classic and tying for fourth at The Heritage.
Corey Pavin will play in his 19th career Travelers Championship. He has six top 10 finishes at the tournament, including a second place finish in 2010 when he fired a final round 66 to get into a playoff with Bubba Watson and Scott Verplank. Pavin was also the 2010 United States Ryder Cup captain. Pavin is a 15-time PGA TOUR champion and winner of the 1995 U.S. Open Championship.
2008 Masters champion Trevor Immelman will be playing in his first Travelers Championship since his initial appearance in 2006. Immelman has put together a solid season in 2011 making the cut in nine of 10 starts, which include three top-25 finishes.
The Travelers Championship is one of Connecticut’s premier annual sporting events and is the PGA TOUR’s only early summer stop in the Northeast, which will be played June 20 – 26, 2011, at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn. Reigning champion Bubba Watson will look to defend his title against a top field that already includes Anthony Kim, Padraig Harrington, Hunter Mahan, Vijay Singh, Zach Johnson, John Daly and more.
