SIX EARLY PLAYER COMMITMENTS
Watson, Perry, Singh, Glover, Vegas and Kim Among Early Commitments
Hartford, Conn., March 2, 2011 – Travelers Championship officials today announced six early commitments to this year’s tournament. Previous winners of the Travelers Championship, Bubba Watson and Kenny Perry, as well as Vijay Singh, Lucas Glover, Jhonattan Vegas and Anthony Kim have officially committed to compete at TPC River Highlands, June 20-26.
“I’m thrilled to have players of this caliber already committing to our tournament,” said Travelers Championship Tournament Director Nathan Grube. “We are excited to have our past two tournament champions returning, while bringing back favorites Singh, Kim, Glover and one of the TOUR’s top rookies in Vegas to TPC River Highlands. Early commitments such as this are an example of how high-caliber players are already looking forward to the Travelers Championship.”
Bubba Watson, who will make his fifth appearance at the Travelers Championship, looks to defend his 2010 title. After capturing his first career victory on the PGA TOUR at the Travelers Championship in 2010, he has continued his success into 2011. This season, Watson has earned his second career victory at the Farmers Insurance Open and most recently finished fourth at the Accenture Match Play Championships. He is currently third in the 2011 FedExCup regular season standings and 15th in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Fourteen-time PGA TOUR winner, Kenny Perry will be making his 23rd appearance at the Travelers Championship. In 2009, he won the Travelers Championship with a record setting 22 under par (258 overall). Perry has a dual membership with the PGA TOUR and Champions Tour in 2011, but has only competed in PGA TOUR events to start the season.
Currently ranking seventh in the FedExCup, Vijay Singh has two top ten finishes this year, including a second place finish at the Northern Trust Open and a tie for third at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. He has 34 career victories including three major championships, as well as the 2008 FedExCup championship. This year’s tournament will mark his eighth appearance at the Travelers Championship.
2009 U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover will be making his sixth appearance at the Travelers Championship. His best finish in Cromwell came in 2009 with a tie for 11th place. In 2010, Glover earned three top-10 finishes with his best finish being a tie for third at THE PLAYERS Championship.
Jhonattan Vegas is expected to be a strong candidate for the PGA TOUR’s 2011 Rookie of the Year award. He won just his second start on TOUR at the Bob Hope Classic in La Quinta, California. He is currently second in the 2011 FedExCup standings, and this will mark his first ever appearance to TPC River Highlands.
Entering his fifth season on the PGA TOUR, Anthony Kim has three career victories, most recently at the 2010 Shell Houston Open. Currently No. 34 in the Official World Golf Rankings, Kim will be making his second trip to TPC River Highlands.
