PATRICK CANTLAY COMMITS TO 2020 TRAVELERS CHAMPIONSHIP
HARTFORD, Conn., Feb. 11, 2020 – The Travelers Championship today announced that Patrick Cantlay has committed to play in the 2020 tournament. Cantlay is a two-time winner on the PGA TOUR and is currently No. 6 in the Official World Golf Ranking. In 2011, Cantlay shot a 60 at TPC River Highlands — the lowest score by an amateur in PGA TOUR history — playing on a sponsor’s exemption as a 19-year-old.
“Patrick will always be remembered for what he did as an amateur here in 2011, but since turning professional he has won on the PGA TOUR, played in the Presidents Cup and been a consistent presence on tournament leaderboards,” said Travelers Championship Tournament Director Nathan Grube. “We are happy to see him have continued success, and we are looking forward to seeing him back in Connecticut in June.”
Cantlay’s PGA TOUR wins have come at the 2019 Memorial Tournament and the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in 2018. This season, his best finishes have been a second at the Shriners and a fourth at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.
Before turning professional, Cantlay was the top-ranked amateur in the world and was named the nation’s top collegiate player while at UCLA. He represented the United States at the 2011 Walker Cup and went 3-2 at the 2019 Presidents Cup.
Since the start of the 2017 PGA TOUR season, Cantlay has been a model of consistency, making the cut in 56 of 61 starts with 22 top-10 finishes.
“Adding Patrick is great for our player field, and we’re thrilled that he’ll be joining us in 2020,” said Andy Bessette, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer at Travelers. “Our relationship with him is a perfect example of what we’ve tried to do over the years. We gave a promising young amateur an exemption and have built a wonderful connection with him since then.”
Cantlay joins two other players ranked in the world’s top 10 — No. 1 Rory McIlroy and No. 4 Justin Thomas — along with Bubba Watson in the field for the 2020 Travelers Championship, which will be held June 22–28 at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut.
