Marc Leishman Wins 2012 Travelers Championship
Marc Leishman can now call himself a winner on the PGA TOUR. The 28-year-old Aussie fired a bogey-free 62 in the final round of the Travelers Championship to win the title by one stroke over multiple time TOUR winners Charley Hoffman and Bubba Watson.
“What an awesome week,” said Leishman. “It’s an unbelievable feeling. It’s probably not the way I would have expected to get my first win. But what do you say, you take them when you get them, any way you can.”
Entering the final round Leishman was at 6-under and stood six strokes off the lead. Working off inspiration from 2007 champion Hunter Mahan’s 61, he went out and shot 30 on the front nine. He figured he would need to shoot a 61 to get to 15-under for the win, but the 62 was good enough to make him the sixth first-time winner on TOUR this season.
Leishman’s only previous appearance at the Travelers Championship came in 2009, where he finished in a tie for 70th.
Leishman becomes the fifth first-time winner in the last seven years at the Travelers Championship, joining J.J. Henry (2006), Hunter Mahan (2007), Bubba Watson (2010) and Fredrik Jacobson (2011). The 2013 Travelers Championship will take place June 17-23 at TPC River Highlands.
