LUCAS GLOVER WINS WELLS FARGO CHAMPIONSHIP
TRAVELERS CHAMPIONSHIP EARLY COMMIT EARNS THIRD PGA TOUR VICTORY
CROMWELL, Conn., May 8, 2011 – Lucas Glover won the Wells Fargo Championship and earned his third PGA TOUR victory today. Glover who has committed to the 2011 Travelers Championship shot a final round 69 and then faced former Clemson University teammate Jonathan Byrd in a sudden death playoff. Glover two putted for par on the first playoff hole to win for the first time since his 2009 U.S. Open title at Bethpage Black.
“I’m elated,” said Lucas Glover after his victory. “Any time you win, you’re pleased. It means you beat everybody. You did what you set out to do on Thursday morning when the bell rang. Against this field and on this golf course and in a tournament of this magnitude, I’m thrilled.”
Glover earned $1.17 million with the victory and moved to 23rd place in the 2011 FedExCup standings. Before the win today, his best finish of 2011 was a T20 at the Transitions Championship. Glover will be making his sixth appearance to TPC River Highlands this June and his best finish came in 2009 with a tie for 11th place.
Three other Travelers Championship early commitments finished in the top 10, including Zach Johnson (T6), Padraig Harrington (T9) and Vijay Singh (T9).
Johnson had his best finish of the year and first top 10 in 2011. Harrington shot a final round 68 to finish in the top 10 for the third time this year. Singh also earned his third top-10 finish in 2011, which includes a second place finish at the Northern Trust Open and a tie for third at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
