Johnson, Curtis, Clark, Glover and Leonard Commit to the Tournament Field
HARTFORD, Conn., May 17, 2012 – The Travelers Championship tournament field continues to get stronger, as the tournament today announced five new commitments. Zach Johnson, Ben Curtis, Tim Clark, Lucas Glover and Justin Leonard have committed to compete at the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands from June 18 to 24.
“We are thrilled to announce another wave of early commitments and add these great players to our field for 2012,” said Travelers Championship Tournament Director Nathan Grube. “Our fans have established a great following for these players over the years and we are excited to welcome them back to Connecticut.”
Zach Johnson is making his seventh appearance at the Travelers Championship. Johnson is having another successful season, making the cut in all 12 events he has played. In those 12 events, he has six top-25 finishes, three top-10 finishes and two T2, with his most recent coming at last weekend’s PLAYERS Championship. He has seven career TOUR wins – including the 2007 Masters – and 41 top-10 finishes. This season, Johnson is No. 18 in the FedExCup rankings and No. 27 in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Ben Curtis, who is making his eighth appearance at the Travelers Championship, has experienced success at TPC River Highlands in the past. He has had four top-20 finishes at the Travelers Championship, including a fourth place finish in 2009 and 2005. The 2003 Open Champion and PGA Tour Rookie of the Year has won four times on TOUR, including a victory at the 2012 Valero Texas Open. Curtis has four straight top-15 finishes, including a T2 at THE PLAYERS Championship and a T5 at the Wells Fargo Championship. He is currently No. 17 in the FedExCup rankings.
Making his first appearance to TPC River Highlands since 2005, Tim Clark has saved some of the best performances of his career for major tournaments. He finished third in both the PGA Championship in 2003 and the U.S. Open in 2005, and finished second at the Masters Tournament in 2006. His only PGA TOUR win of his career was an impressive one, winning THE PLAYERS Championship in 2010. He also has three victories on the European Tour.
Lucas Glover will be making his sixth appearance at the Travelers Championship and he has finished in the top-20 twice. Glover has three career TOUR victories, including winning the 2009 U.S. Open. He also earned a fifth place finish at the 2009 PGA Championship. He’s also appeared on two winning Presidents Cup teams in 2007 and 2009. In a career that began in 2001, Glover has earned nearly $15 million in career earnings.
Twelve-time PGA TOUR winner Justin Leonard is making his ninth appearance at the Travelers Championship. Leonard’s best finish this year was a T8 at the Northern Trust Open. Since turning professional in 1994, the 39-year-old Leonard has tremendous accomplishments, including winning The Open Championship in 1997, earning second place in the PGA Championship in 1997 and 2004, as well as participating in three victorious Presidents Cup teams (1996, 2005, and 2009) and two victorious Ryder Cup teams (1999, 2008).
These five players join and already notable field, including defending champion Fredrik Jacobson, Masters champion Bubba Watson, Hunter Mahan, Webb Simpson, Keegan Bradley, Padraig Harrington, Ian Poulter, Vijay Singh, Ryo Ishikawa, Patrick Cantlay and many others. The Travelers Championship will be held June 18 to 24 at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn.
