HARRINGTON, SIMPSON AND POULTER COMMIT TO THE FIELD
HARTFORD, Conn., March 16, 2012 – Travelers Championship officials today announced three more early commitments to this year’s tournament. Three-time major champion Padraig Harrington will join the eighth ranked player in the world, Webb Simpson and 14-time winner Ian Poulter at TPC River Highlands from June 18 to 24.
“We are excited to have these proven PGA TOUR winners commit to our field, which now includes two of the top ten players in the Official World Golf Rankings,” said Travelers Championship Tournament Director Nathan Grube. “This announcement continues to set the stage for what is sure to be another exciting tournament come June.”
Padraig Harrington will be making his fourth career appearance in the Travelers Championship. Making the cut in all three previous appearances, his best finish in Cromwell, Conn. came in 2010 when he finished T5. Harrington has five career PGA TOUR victories including the 2007 and 2008 Open Championship as well as the 2008 PGA Championship. Harrington has made the cut in all three PGA TOUR events in 2012 – including a T7 at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and he currently leads the 2012 Transitions Championship after shooting a career-best 61 yesterday.
Currently eighth in the Official World Golf Rankings, Webb Simpson will be making his fifth career start at the Travelers Championship, which began with a sponsor exemption in 2008. Simpson’s best finish at TPC River Highlands came last year with a T13 finish. 2011 was a banner year for Simpson, which included two PGA TOUR victories, 12 top-10 finishes and a second place finish in the Final FedExCup Standings. He also finished second on the PGA TOUR Money List with more than $6 million in earnings.
Entering his ninth season on the PGA TOUR, Ian Poulter has 14 professional victories worldwide, including the 2010 World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship. The Englishman has also competed on three Ryder Cup teams for the Europeans and looks to earn another spot in 2012. The 2012 Travelers Championship will mark his second appearance at TPC River Highlands where he finished T24 in 2011.
