Friday, June 21 Recap
Friday’s spotty weather was greeted with great crowds for the second round of the 2019 Travelers Championship. Fans were not deterred by the intermittent rain and enjoyed a full day of good golf, plus an evening concert by Spin Doctors once play concluded.
The day began with a six-way tie for the lead, and ended with one of those six players alone at the top. Zack Sucher shot a 65 on Friday, pushing his two-round total to 11-under-par and building a two-shot lead over Chez Reavie and Keegan Bradley, both of whom carded second-round 66s. Ryan Moore (64) and Bronson Burgoon (68) were another shot back at 8-under.
Fan favorites and past Travelers Championship winners had mixed results on Friday. Defending champion Bubba Watson worked his way into contention, shooting a 66 to reach 5-under-par. He’s looking to become just the second player in tournament history to win back-to-back here, joining Phil Mickelson (2001-2002). Mickelson struggled to a 76 and missed the cut. Brooks Koepka, ranked No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking, made the cut after rounds of 71-66.
The 36-hole cut came at 2-under 139, with 82 players advancing to the weekend. The first twosome on Saturday will start at 7:15 a.m., with the final pairing of Sucher and Reavie going off at 1:55 p.m.
In the Stanley Black & Decker Fan Zone, the Concert Series presented by Powerstation Events and Xfinity welcomed Spin Doctors to the stage, with the band singing hits including “Two Princes,” “Mary Jane” and “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong.”
Saturday brings the third round of play, with gorgeous weather and a big crowd in the forecast. The Concert Series will continue Saturday night, with popular country duo LOCASH taking the stage in the Fan Zone after play finishes.
