DEFENDING CHAMPION XANDER SCHAUFFELE COMMITS TO 2023 TRAVELERS CHAMPIONSHIP
HARTFORD, Conn., Feb. 14, 2023 – Xander Schauffele has committed to return and attempt to defend his title at the 2023 Travelers Championship. Last year’s victory at TPC River Highlands was his sixth career win on the PGA TOUR. This will be the fifth Travelers Championship appearance for Schauffele, who is currently Number 6 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
“It’s always special having our defending champion in the player field because it brings back so many great memories,” said Travelers Championship Tournament Director Nathan Grube. “Xander had a spectacular 2022 that included an amazing week at Travelers, and he’s continued to play at a very high level since then. Our fans enjoyed cheering him on to victory and they’ll be ready to welcome him back as a big part of the tournament family.”
In another close finish at TPC River Highlands, Schauffele birdied the 18th hole during the final round, closing with a 68 to win by two strokes. It was part of a three-win PGA TOUR season for Schauffele, who partnered with Patrick Cantlay to win the team event in New Orleans and then won in his next start after the Travelers Championship, taking the Genesis Scottish Open. He finished T18 or better in 10 of his final 11 TOUR events last season, a stretch that included three wins and three other top-5 efforts. This season, Schauffele tied for third at The American Express and was T9 at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP.
At the 2022 Presidents Cup, Schauffele won the clinching point for the U.S. team and was victorious in three of his four matches. He also went 3-1 while making his Ryder Cup debut in 2021, helping the U.S. to a lopsided team win there, too. Schauffele earned the Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
“Xander is a tremendously talented player, and it was exciting to see him win the Travelers Championship,” said Andy Bessette, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer at Travelers. “He’s also an extremely tough competitor, and when it got close last year, Xander played his best and finished with a birdie. I’m looking forward to seeing him back in Connecticut, and I’m sure he’ll be even more motivated to defend his title against an incredible field.”
The 2023 Travelers Championship will be held June 19-25 at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, and will feature a next level field of the world’s top professional golfers and the most popular players on the PGA TOUR competing for an elevated purse of $20 million.
