BRYSON DECHAMBEAU COMMITS TO 2019 TRAVELERS CHAMPIONSHIP
Tournament now has commitments from three of the top-5 players in the world
HARTFORD, Conn., Feb. 5, 2019 – The Travelers Championship today announced that Bryson DeChambeau, a five-time winner on the PGA TOUR who is currently No. 5 in the Official World Golf Ranking, has committed to play in this year’s tournament at TPC River Highlands.
“Bryson has captivated the golf world with his performance and unique view of the game,” said Travelers Championship Tournament Director Nathan Grube. “We have been able to get to know him since he accepted an exemption back in 2016 and the fans have loved seeing him here every year since.”
DeChambeau has been on quite a run, with four victories over a nine-start stretch and five worldwide wins since the start of 2018, which is more than any other player. This includes his most recent win at the Dubai Desert Classic, his first on the European Tour. Four of DeChambeau’s five PGA TOUR wins came in 2018; he won the Memorial Tournament, then won the first two FedExCup playoff tournaments. He also captured the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in his first start of the 2018-19 season.
As an amateur, DeChambeau became just the fifth player to win both the U.S. Amateur and NCAA individual titles in the same year. Since turning professional in 2016 he has played in the past three Travelers Championships, making the cut all three times. He tied for ninth in 2018.
“Bryson is one of the most exciting young players to watch, and he’s already built quite a resume by winning tournaments on the PGA TOUR and representing the United States in the Ryder Cup last year,” said Andy Bessette, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer at Travelers. “He’s exactly the kind of player we want in our field: He has an interesting approach to the game and is passionate about the charitable mission that drives the Travelers Championship.”
DeChambeau joins two other players ranked among the world’s top five – No. 2 Brooks Koepka and No. 4 Justin Thomas – who already have committed to play in the 2019 Travelers Championship, which will be held June 17-23 at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut.
