ABRAHAM ANCER, JOAQUÍN NIEMANN AND WILL ZALATORIS COMMIT TO 2022 TRAVELERS CHAMPIONSHIP
HARTFORD, Conn., April 19, 2022 – The Travelers Championship today announced that Abraham Ancer, Joaquín Niemann and Will Zalatoris have all committed to play in the 2022 tournament. All three are among the top 30 in the Official World Golf Ranking: Niemann is No. 16, Ancer is No. 18 and Zalatoris is No. 29.
“This trio gives us three more highly-ranked players in a field that continues to add the world’s best,” said Travelers Championship Tournament Director Nathan Grube. “They’ve all been having solid seasons, and they fit perfectly into the competitive event we want to deliver our fans.”
Abraham Ancer became a winner on the PGA TOUR last year when he captured the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. This season, his best finish is a tie for fifth at the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play. Ancer played on the International Team in the Presidents Cup for the first time in 2019. Ancer was born in Texas and grew up in Mexico. He finished fourth last year at TPC River Highlands, his best showing in five appearances. He also tied for eighth in 2019 and was T11 in 2020.
Joaquín Niemann was the first player from Chile to win on the PGA TOUR when he captured A Military Tribute at the Greenbrier in 2019. He added a second victory this February by winning the Genesis Invitational. Niemann has two other top-10 finishes this season and will be making his fourth straight appearance at the Travelers Championship. He has made the cut all three times at TPC River Highlands and tied for fifth in 2019. The 23-year-old Niemann also represented the International Team at the Presidents Cup in 2019.
Will Zalatoris will be making his Travelers Championship debut. He was the PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year in 2021, when he had eight top-10 finishes, including a second at the Masters, a T6 at the U.S. Open and a T8 at the PGA Championship. Zalatoris has followed that up with a strong start this season. He has four top-10 finishes and recently tied for sixth at the Masters. Zalatoris won on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2020, owns the lowest career scoring average at Wake Forest and won the 2014 U.S. Junior Amateur.
“Abraham, Joaquín and Will represent the newest generation of PGA TOUR stars and it has been exciting to see them contend week after week,” said Andy Bessette, Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer at Travelers. “In addition to their tremendous skill on the golf course, they are all driven to be the best. We’re looking forward to seeing them compete at the Travelers Championship in June.”
Ancer, Niemann and Zalatoris join a star-studded player field that includes Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Xander Schauffele, Brooks Koepka and Bubba Watson. The 2022 Travelers Championship will be held at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. Tournament week is June 20-26, with gates open to all spectators starting Wednesday, June 22.
