2011 RACE WILL BENEFIT CAMP COURANT
The Third Annual BlumShapiro 5K will take place on June 11
Hartford, Conn., March 31, 2011 – Tournament officials today announced that proceeds from the BlumShapiro 5K at the Travelers Championship will now support Camp Courant, the largest free day camp in the nation. The race will be held on Saturday, June 11, at TPC River Highlands. This year’s race will feature activities for kids of all ages, including a Kids Fun Run.
“We are excited to add Camp Courant as the charitable beneficiary for the BlumShapiro 5K at the Travelers Championship,” said Tournament Director Nathan Grube. “Adding Camp Courant as one of our tournament charities will allow us to support another local organization that makes a difference with children and families in our community.”
Camp Courant has provided free summer activities for city children since the summer of 1894. Today, it is the nation’s largest, and one of the oldest, free day camps where children ages 5 through 12 participate in a variety of recreational, educational and cultural programs at a campsite in Farmington.
“We are grateful for the generosity of the Travelers Championship, BlumShapiro and the hundreds of participants who will come out to run in the 2011 race,” said Camp Courant Executive Director Elizabeth Gibbs. “The proceeds from the race will give hundreds of children an opportunity to participate in our camp this summer.”
The tournament proudly supports the PGA TOUR Tradition of Giving Back by donating 100 percent of net proceeds to charities each year. The BlumShapiro 5K for Camp Courant at the Travelers Championship is one example of a unique event that helps support the tournament’s charitable mission. The 5K road race began back in 2009, with more than 200 runners participating. Last year, the race increased to over 500 people who came out to show their support at TPC River Highlands.
The 2011 event will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, with a Kids Fun Run for youth ages 2-11, followed by the 5K road race. The race is held along the Cromwell roads that line some of the fairways and greens of TPC River Highlands and the practice facility. Entry into the race includes a donation to Camp Courant, race t-shirt, Any One Day ticket to the 2011 Travelers Championship and more.
The race would not be possible without the support and efforts of BlumShapiro and other local sponsors. BlumShapiro is not only a financial supporter for the race, but they also help with overall organization, race participation and recruitment of volunteers.
“The BlumShapiro 5K for Camp Courant at the Travelers Championship is dedicated to giving back to the community. Raising funds to give Hartford children an opportunity to attend Camp Courant is a goal our runners, families and volunteers can work together to achieve,” said Carl Johnson, managing partner of BlumShapiro.
The race will be one of the kick-off events for the 2011 Travelers Championship, which will be held June 20 – 26, 2011, at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn. The PGA TOUR’s only early summer stop in the Northeast will welcome some of the world’s best golfers, such as Bubba Watson, Kenny Perry, Vijay Singh, Lucas Glover, Jhonattan Vegas and Anthony Kim.
