BUBBA WATSON COMMITS TO PLAY 2016 TRAVELERS CHAMPIONSHIP
Reigning champion and No. 4 golfer in the world set to return to TPC River Highlands
HARTFORD, Conn., April 27, 2016 – The Travelers Championship today announced that 2015 winner Bubba Watson has committed to play the 2016 tournament. He will also be returning to TPC River Highlands for Travelers Championship Media Day on June 20, which will include a press conference and interview with Watson recounting last year’s victory. Watson earned his first PGA TOUR victory at the Travelers Championship in 2010 and is currently No. 4 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR).
“Bubba is one of our tournament’s biggest ambassadors, and we’re thrilled that he’ll be back to defend his title this summer,” said Travelers Championship Tournament Director Nathan Grube. “He has a great history here, and fans love seeing him.”
Watson has nine career PGA TOUR victories, with five of those wins coming since 2014. He’s won the Masters twice (2012 and 2014) and routinely contends in PGA TOUR events, earning 51 top-10 and 102 top-25 finishes in 240 career tournaments. He has also made more than $34 million in TOUR earnings in his career. So far this season, Watson won the Northern Trust Open and has three top-10s and four top-25s in eight events.
In nine Travelers Championship appearances, Watson has finished in the top-six five times. Both of his victories at TPC River Highlands came in playoffs, defeating top international golfer Paul Casey in 2015 and Corey Pavin and Scott Verplank in two playoff holes in 2010. Watson belted a 396-yard drive on the 72nd hole of the 2010 tournament — the longest drive in the 64-year tournament history — which is commemorated with a plaque in the 18th fairway where it happened.
