BIRDIES FOR THE BRAVE OUTING RAISES MORE THAN $90,000

CROMWELL, Conn., October 16, 2012 – The Travelers Championship and TPC River Highlands partnered together yesterday at TPC River Highlands to host a charity golf tournament to benefit Birdies for the Brave. The net proceeds for the event surpassed $90,000, which will help support eight specific military charities (United Through Reading; Homes for Our Troops; Operation Homefront; Navy Seal Foundation; Special Operations Warrior Foundation; Wounded Warrior Project; Military Warriors Support Foundation; Green Beret Foundation).

Birdies for the Brave is the PGA TOUR’s primary vehicle for supporting the brave men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families. Since 2005, the TOUR has joined with PGA TOUR players and corporate partners to raise millions of dollars for military homefront groups that directly serve military men and women lost or seriously injured in performance of their duty, through fundraising events at TPC Clubs nationwide.

The golf tournament was a scramble format and the winning group shot a 14-under par 56, which included Barry Rosenberg, Kenneth Fink, Jeffrey Rajotte and John Mason. Each of the winners received TPC River Highlands gift certificates and all of the golfers during the day received a special tee gift provided by NIKE Golf.

Following a great day of golf, all of the golfers were invited to a dinner and awards reception, which was sponsored and served by Applebee’s. WFSB-Channel 3 was the media partner for the event and morning news anchor Eric Parker helped to emcee the awards reception. Sponsors for the event included Webster Bank, Travelers, CT National Guard, Coca-Cola, Michelob ULTRA, John Car, Morande Ford, Clear Thinking Group, Smith & Wesson, Saint Francis Care and Devine Hydraulics, Inc.

Brian Ohler, a representative for Birdies for the Brave and the Wounded Warrior Project, spoke to the group during the dinner about his experience fighting for our country and how important the charities of Birdies for the Brave have been to help with his transition back to civilian life.

The Birdies for the Brave Golf Outing is just one of the many events hosted by the Travelers Championship to help support charities throughout our community. The 2013 Travelers Championship will be held June 17-23 at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn.
