David Mathis Takes First Round Lead at 6-Under

After the first round of the Travelers Championship, David Mathis leads the field after firing a six-under par 64. Mathis got off to a hot start when he followed his birdie on the 10th hole, his first of the day, with an ace at the par-3 11th. He then rattled off three birdies in his next four holes as he made the turn in 30. Mathis played the back one-under par to sign for a 64.

“I was hitting a lot of great shots and I guess it felt like a lull compared to how I started,” said Mathis after being asked about how he played. “But I birdied the 10th, which was my first, and then to make a hole in one on No. 11 and made a long, long putt on 12 just really got me jump started for the day.”

Behind Mathis is a strong collection of contenders. Defending champion Fredrik Jacobson showed why he loves to play on this course after he posted a 65 to finish in a tie for second place. Nathan Green and Will Claxton also shot 65 to finish one stroke behind the leader going into the second round.

The spotlight group of the day featuring the last three major winners, Webb Simpson, Bubba Watson and Keegan Bradley, did not fail to produce lots of low numbers. Simpson and Watson each carded a 66, while Bradley finished with a 68.

Tee Times will begin tomorrow at 6:50 a.m. off holes number 1 and 10.
