CROMWELL, Conn., June 12, 2010 – The second annual BlumShapiro 5K for Charity welcomed more than 500 runners to TPC River Highlands on Saturday morning to take part in a Kids Fun Run and 5K road race. The race helped raise funds and awareness for five local food shelters and homeless facilities.

In the male division, David McKay, from Rocky Hill, Conn., set a new course record with a time of 16:06, which beat last year’s time by more than one minute. 13-year-old Kaelin Baker, from Farmington, Conn., won the female division with a finish of 20:28. In the team division, the Ben N Jerry Bolts won the male team division and Team River took home the female team crown.

New for 2010, a half-mile Kids Fun Run kicked off the festivities in the morning with more than 30 kids ages 2-11. At the conclusion of the run, kids had an opportunity to compete in golf skills competitions that were hosted by the First Tee of Connecticut on their new learning links at the TPC River Highlands practice facility.

The race was made possible by the support of the race day sponsors, BlumShapiro, Hartford Marathon Foundation, CT1 Media, Clear Channel Radio, Coca-Cola, Dunkin’ Donuts, Fleet Feet Sports, Fresh Point, Highland Park Market, Nature Valley, DePuy Mitek and Powerstation Events.

The race was the kick off for the 2010 Travelers Championship, which will be held June 21 – 27, 2010, at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn.
