2014 BLUMSHAPIRO 5K AT THE TRAVELERS CHAMPIONSHIP WILL BENEFIT HARTFORD’S CAMP COURANT

HARTFORD, Conn., February 21, 2014 – Tournament Officials announced today that the sixth annual BlumShapiro 5K for Camp Courant at the Travelers Championship will occur on Saturday, May 3, at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn. The annual kickoff to the Travelers Championship will support Hartford’s Camp Courant, the oldest, largest free day camp in the nation. In addition to the 5K road race, festivities this year will include a Kids Fun Run and family-friendly activities.

“We are thrilled to welcome back Hartford’s Camp Courant as the benefiting charity of the BlumShapiro 5K for Camp Courant at the Travelers Championship,” said Tournament Director Nathan Grube. “As the largest provider of free day camp in the nation, Hartford’s Camp Courant continues to improve the lives of local citizens while making a huge impact on the community.”

“For six consecutive years, BlumShapiro has kicked off the charitable activities at the Travelers Championship with a healthy, fun-filled event for runners, walkers and families. It’s an honor to have our event’s charitable donations directed to Hartford’s Camp Courant in celebration of its 120th year of operation serving the children of Hartford,” said Carl Johnson, executive managing partner of BlumShapiro.

Founded in 1894, Hartford’s Camp Courant provides six weeks of fun and learning free to children ages five through 12 residing in the city of Hartford each summer. The goal of the summer day camp program is to give Hartford children the opportunity to learn about themselves, their community and their world in a natural, safe environment, all while enjoying fresh air and the company of peers, friends and supportive staff. In 2013, Hartford’s Camp Courant served over 1,100 Hartford children. 2014 will mark its 120th year of operation.

“It is an honor to once again partner with BlumShapiro and the Travelers Championship in an effort to make a difference for the children of Hartford. Both organizations are a true example throughout Greater Hartford and beyond in giving back to the community. This opportunity will allow us to promote Camp’s mission and will allow Hartford’s kids the chance to develop positive relationships, learn, and most importantly have fun in summer of 2014,” said Josh Reese, executive director & CEO of Hartford’s Camp Courant.

Festivities at the BlumShapiro 5K will begin at 8:00 a.m. with a Kids Fun Run for youth ages 12 and under. The 5K road race will follow at 8:30 a.m. in which runners will compete along the roads that line the fairways and greens of TPC River Highlands. Participants are invited to stay after the competition to enjoy family activities including face painting, mini golf, clowns, characters, games, jugglers, balloon artists and music in a family-friendly atmosphere.

Registration for the 2014 BlumShapiro 5K for Camp Courant at the Travelers Championship can be found at here. The advance entry fee is $25 for adults and $10 for children participating in the Kids Fun Run. The race entry fee includes a $10 donation to Hartford’s Camp Courant, race t-shirt, an Any One Day Ticket to the 2014 Travelers Championship and more. Also, participants will have the opportunity to make an additional donation to Hartford’s Camp Courant, as well as the chance to fundraise for this great cause.

The race would not be possible without the vision and dedication of BlumShapiro. In addition to the financial backing they provide, BlumShapiro works tirelessly on growing the race by assisting with the overall planning, race participation and providing volunteers on race day.

The Travelers Championship proudly supports the PGA TOUR’s Tradition of Giving Back by donating 100 percent of net proceeds to charity each year. The tournament raised more than $1.25 million in 2013 for 180 charities. The BlumShapiro 5K for Camp Courant is one of many events associated with the Travelers Championship. As the PGA TOUR’s only early summer stop in the northeast, the Travelers Championship will be held June 16-22, 2014 at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn. Past champions have included Ken Duke, Marc Leishman, Fredrik Jacobson, Bubba Watson, Kenny Perry, Stewart Cink and Hunter Mahan.
